Gooseberries

Gooseberries

Ribes uva-crispa – A fruit that just isn’t found in the shops anymore but so delicious, especially in a pie or crumble with some cream or iced-cream!

There are so many lovely, flavourful varieties to choose from. I grow the ‘Hinnonmaki’ red and a green ’Invicta’ cultivar and sometimes they have been so heavy with fruit that branches have broken. That’s been my fault for not getting in there and thinning them in time. In the same way that you thin apples after the June drop, thinning gooseberries allows greater air circulation and prevents broken branches.

The smaller firm fruits will be sour but are still edible. These are the ones that are great for cooking with – add sugar to knock up some pies, crumbles, fools and compotes.
