October on the allotment is the time when I start clearing the plot for the coming winter, plan changes for the following year and sow my broad bean seeds, onion sets and garlic.
Autumn is a season of change. Tender summer crops die back, trees offer their fruits, leaves change colour, winds of change blow and it is a often a time for bonfires and hot soup.
First frost should arrive at some point this month down here in the south and this will sweeten parsnips.
Spring flower bulbs should be planted early in the month ready for spring displays of snowdrops, narcissi, tulips and crocus.
