Broad Beans

Broad Beans

Broad beans (Vicia faba)

Beans, beans, good for the heart…

Why these are not grown and used more here in the UK is almost beyond me. I know they are a favourite amongst some of the celebrity chefs and I also adore them, however they have a reputation for suffering badly with black bean aphid.

I get around this by autumn sowing a variety called ‘Aquadulce’ so they overwinter in a bed and are ready to harvest around May time which is just about when the Black Bean Aphid moves onto the beans from its winter hosts. It is also good to know that the ground is not unused during the colder winter months.
